Armenia is a small country located in the centre of
the Caucasus mountains. It is a land locked country
surrounded by Muslim countries. Christianity is the
primary state religion established since 301AD. In
1986, Armenia (formerly Soviet Armenia) had a
population of 3.8 million. Since independence in
1991, deteriorating economic conditions have led to
large scale emigration. Over 40% of the population
lives below the poverty line, and a further 30% in
relative poverty. Armenians have a rich and a
colourful culture, their own alphabet and a
socioeconomic structure that has allowed them to
preserve their distinct way of life.
